Earth Day with HMNS at Sugar Land
BugLife at the Brazos
Saturday April 3 | 11:00 am & 2:00 pm
Get into nature at Brazos Bend State Park! Join us to hike a scenic trail, try multiple collecting methods and take samples from diverse habitat areas. Discover different kinds of insects, including key pollinator species living in our community and our own backyards. Each participant receives a field notebook to personalize, take notes and draw their discoveries, and a collection vial.
Meet the Pollinators
Saturday April 10 | 11:00 am & 2:00 pm
Meet in our new Outdoor Learning Center to explore different types of pollinators – what they do, what they need to survive, and how you can practice pollinator conservation at home. Customize and assemble a native bee house to add to your home pollinator habitat.
Make a mini Pollinator Garden
Saturday April 17 | 11:00 am & 2:00 pm
Meet in HMNS Sugar Land’s Outdoor Learning Center and learn what it takes to create a successful pollinator garden at home. Explore which flowers are most attractive to different types of pollinators. Then choose the right plants for your very own mini pollinator garden, which you paint and fill with plants.
Saturday April 24
Prepare for the spring gardening season at the Spring Plant Sale. Featuring plants that support the native pollinators in your backyard.
Bug watching with Brandon Ballengée at Sugar Land
Join artist/biologist Brandon Ballengée for an evening of bug-watching at the “Love Motel for Insects” outside of HMNS Sugar Land’s outdoor learning center! We will look for nocturnal arthropods such as beautiful moths, bold beetles and other segmented critters that go bump in the night attracted to the ultraviolet lights of the sculpture!
