Overnight Frequently Asked Questions
What can be expected during in a Scout Overnight program? Every Scout Overnight includes hands on activities, a planetarium show, sleeping in one of the Museum’s exhibit halls, a late night snack and continental breakfast. Each Overnight includes activities that go along with the theme noted in their title and if that theme also coincides with one of our special exhibitions the event will include admission to the special exhibit in the morning after breakfast. Specific listings of Overnight activities are not released prior to the Overnight event. This allows the Overnight staff the flexibility to plan the best program possible for the groups registered.
How long is a Scout Overnight? Check in begins at 7:00 pm on Friday evening and the Overnight continues until 9:00 am on Saturday morning. All Overnighters are able to stay all day on Saturday with free admission to the Museum’s permanent exhibit halls until the close of business. More details about the Overnight schedule accompany the Chaperone Survival Guide groups will receive after registration.
Where do Overnight participants sleep? Overnighters sleep among the Museum exhibits, typically in the Hall of the Americas and occasionally in the hall of Gems and Minerals.
Is dinner included in the price of a Scout Overnight? Dinner is not included with the Overnight, please eat a full meal before you arrive and be ready for an evening of activities. A late night snack is provided during the evening activities and in the morning a buffet continental breakfast.
How will my group know what to pack for the Overnight event? The leader or parent who registers the group will receive a Chaperone Survival guide along with their registration confirmation email. The guide includes a list of do’s and don’ts as well as a list of what to pack.
What is the Museum’s recommended ratio of chaperones to scouts at Overnight events? The minimum number of participants to register a group is 5 individuals, two adults and three campers. Beyond the minimum the Museum requires at least one adult for every 10 campers but scouting groups are encouraged to follow their council recommendations for adult chaperone ratios.
Can non-scout siblings or friends attend Scout Overnights? No, Scout Overnights are for registered scouts only.
Are scouts outside of the listed eligible participants able to attend? For example, may Brownie Girl Scouts attend a Junior Girl Scout Overnight?
