The Houston Museum of Natural Science Educational Outreach Programs
The Houston Museum of Natural Science offers several different Outreach Programs that can bring an exciting field trip experience right into your classroom. Choose from , , Chevron Earth Science on Wheels, , the , or .
Chevron Earth Science on Wheels
An HMNS paleontologist will bring field geology to your classroom! From crystals to claws and teeth to triceratops skin your students will be amazed by the wonders of Earth Science. Each ESOW presentation lasts approximately 45 minutes, based on the grade level and bell schedule. Presentations are tailored to grade specific TEKS.
Choose from four program topics:
Science Sort
Science Sort is an interactive, hands-on, inquiry based lab presentation focusing on the scientific process where students will analyze and interpret information gathered from fossilized sediment. (K-12)
Focus on Fossils
Discover how fossils are made, where to locate them and how they are found when an HMNS field paleontologist comes to your class to discuss different types of fossilization. (2-12)
Dinosaur Discovery
What was it like to be a dinosaur? Find out when a real paleontologist visits your class. Your students will examine Museum quality casts of carnivorous and herbivorous dinosaurs. (K-5)
Know Your Rocks
Mine for knowledge with your class as you learn about different types of rocks, what they are used for and how they are formed. Students will also learn the difference between difference between rocks and minerals. (2-8)
Each Chevron Earth Science on Wheels presentation lasts 45 minutes, based on the grade level and bell schedule. Presentations for grades K-2 can be limited to 30 minutes. Programs are given indoors at one location in your school. Only one program topic can be presented each day.
Cost: Half day (max. 3 hours or 4 presentations) $375
Whole day (max. 5 hours or 6 presentations) $475
There is a travel fee for programs more than 20 miles from the Museum.
Capacity: Maximum of 30 students per presentation
Ages: Grade level varies per program. Please see age ranges above.

Bugs on Wheels
Be sure to schedule a date with the “Lady Bugs” (Laurie Pierrel and Erin Millender, the Butterfly Center's dynamic entomologist duo). Modeled after the Museum's popular Wildlife On Wheels program, the Bugs On Wheels program will bring a selection of living insects and other arthropods into the classroom for a hands-on presentation. Giant millipedes, hissing cockroaches, amazing walkingsticks, furry tarantulas, and more will amaze the students and turn them on to the incredible world of the arthropods. Choose from four program topics:
Amazing Arthropods brings a selection of living insects and other arthropods into your classroom for hands-on presentations. Giant millipedes, hissing cockroaches, camouflaged walking sticks, furry tarantulas and more amaze students and turn them on to the incredible world of arthropods.
Beautiful Butterflies and Mysterious Moths introduces the amazing cycle of metamorphosis and shows how butterflies and moths differ from each other and from other insects. Students will learn the different needs of caterpillars and adult butterflies and what happens in the pupal stage, as well how butterflies and moths depend on plants, and vice versa.
Monarchs – Metamorphosis, Migration, and Mimicry tells the incredible story of monarch butterflies. Learning about this unique, amazing, yet familiar butterfly will teach students about the process of metamorphosis, warning coloration and mimicry, and how migration can help some animals to survive difficult conditions.
Plants and Pollinators uses a giant flower model, puppets, a bee hive, and real fruits and vegetables to demonstrate the importance of pollination to the plant kingdom and especially to the foods we eat. Did you know that in addition to honeybees, flies, bumblebees, butterflies, moths, bats and hummingbirds all pollinate different plants? Learn more in this fascinating program.

Where the Excitement Comes to You
|

Discovery Dome
- Do you need to find a new way to explain the solar system to your students?
- Have you ever wanted to show your students a volcano up close?
- Do you want to show your students the inside of a cell, but don’t have the equipment?
If you answered YES to any of these questions, the Discovery Dome is for you.
The Discovery Dome is entering its third year of outreach into schools. We use full-dome video of the solar system, earth science topics and the human body to take students on learning adventures. Live presentations or 25-minute movies are available. Scripts and preview videos on DVD are available for many of the shows.

Whole day - 5 hours / 9 presentations - $475
Extended day - 7 hours / 13 presentations - $575

Docents To Go
Have the Museum of Natural Science come to your classroom. A trained HMNS docent will visit your class and present the topic of your choice. Each 45-minute presentation is an object-based, hands-on interactive experience using Museum specimens.

ConocoPhillips Science on Stage

ConocoPhillips Science on Stage
Get ready for science as you’ve never seen it before. These exciting assembly programs use student helpers to explore amazing physical science demonstrations. Each presentation is 45 minutes long. Schedule ConocoPhillips Science on Stage for one grade level or the entire school.
Cost: $375 for the first assembly program
$150 for a second or third presentation on the same topic
There is a travel fee for programs more than 20 miles from the Museum.
Maximum: 250 students per presentation
Grades: 2-12 (We recommend no more than three grade levels per presentation.)
Requirements: a large performance area such as a stage, gymnasium, or cafeteria, a PA system, two eight-foot tables, and access to electricity (Exploring Energy topic only).
Choose from three program topics:
Exploring Energy
Explore energy transformations with electricity, sound, and light. There’s energy everywhere.
Cool Chemistry
Discover the properties and states of matter using liquid nitrogen and amazing chemical reactions.
Motion Commotion
Explore Newton’s laws, simple machines, and the science of motion with rockets, levers, and more.

El Paso Corporation Wildlife on Wheels
Our El Paso Corporation Wildlife on Wheels (WOW) naturalist will visit your school with live animals and actual Museum specimens to give students an exciting hands-on opportunity to explore the basics of animal life.
Choose from four program topics:
Reptiles & Amphibians
From snakes to lizards, frogs to salamanders, explore their natural history, prehistoric to the present.
Texas Wildlife
Investigate the amazing variety of habitats in the Lone Star State and meet some of the animals that call Texas home.
Vertebrates
Living examples of the five major vertebrate groups will show you their distinguishing characteristics.
Invertebrates
Get up close and personal with live insects, arachnids, mollusks, echinoderms and more while learning about Earth’s largest animal group.
Each WOW presentation lasts 30-60 minutes, based on the grade level and bell schedule. We recommend that presentations for grades K-2 be limited to 30 minutes. Programs are given indoors at one location in your school. Only one program topic can be presented each day.

Whole day (max. 5 hours or 8 presentations) $475
