Paleontology Field School for Educators
Come join Dr. Robert Bakker and the other members of the HMNS Department of Paleontology as a member on our summer paleontology field expedition. We will be working in the Pennsylvanian and Permian aged rocks collecting fossils, some of which can be shared directly with your students. Earth science and paleontology will be brought to life during daily field classes where you will learn basic ecology and what fossils tell us about life in the ancient past. Participants will move forward in geologic time from the marine Pennsylvanian environment to the first “modern” terrestrial ecosystem, the Permian, learning about the complex ecosystems of these very different eras. A fossil and rock collection, for use with students, will be created, cleaned and catalogued by the educator during the field school. Back in the classroom, teachers will be able to share the concepts and the excitement of discovery with a digital multimedia record of the excavation. You will return to your classroom with Pennsylvanian aged fossil matrix to recreate the experience with your students in the classroom. With this activity, students hone their observational skills and learn basic statistics as HMNS staff work with your class to evaluate their findings and compare it to other samples during a school year follow up visit.

Who can participate in the Field School for Educators? Any educators interested in learning more about Texas geology and paleontology are invited. As this is a Field School for educators, children are not permitted.
When does the Field School take place? Each year, the field school occurs in the first part of June. In the 2008 field season, the first trip is June 9th to the 14th and the second trip is June 16th to the 21st.
What is the cost of the Field School? Each section of Field School (June 9-14 OR June 16-21) is $1250 per person.
What’s included in the Field School package? All lodging, travel and meals are included during the Field School Experience, with the exception of breakfast the first day and dinner the last. Daily lessons on the geology of Texas, paleontological techniques, classroom connections, biology and physiology will be conducted informally with Dr. Bakker, Curator of Paleontology, and David Temple, Associate Curator of Paleontology. Each day, one on one time will be spent with Museum staff discussing finds and honing your skills. Materials for a dig kit and classroom use will be provided to each teacher. Additionally, Museum staff will work with you, if desired, to provide a classroom visit at your school during the semester directly following your Field School experience.
