Pink Rose Swallowtail

Pink Rose Swallowtail

Pachliopta kotzebuea

This swallowtail is completely black on the upper surface of the wings, but is called the “rose” because of the pink-red spots on the wing undersides and on the body.  Native to tropical southeast Asia, it is related to our pipevine swallowtail; caterpillars of both eat Dutchman’s pipevine (Aristolochia) plants.  Because pipevine plants contain bad-smelling chemicals, this group of swallowtails is sometimes called the “poison feeders.”
