Mummy:  the inside story
September 30, 2005 - February 12, 2006

For years, the only way to learn about Egyptian mummies was to unwrap them - a destructive and ultimately irreversible process.  With the help of modern technology scientists are now able to perform CT scans, which provide a look under the wrappings and inside the mummified remains.  Mummy:  the inside story dives into current technology and takes visitors on an exciting virtual tour beneath the sarcophagus lid - traveling to the past to learn more about life and death in Ancient Egypt.

This Exhibition is presented through the collaboration of The British Museum and the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

Ancient Micro Worlds & Fossil Forests
Friday, November 4, 2005 - Sunday, April 30, 2006
Mezzanine, Second Floor

Giraud Foster and Norman Barker work at the interface of science and fine art, photographing beautiful fossils in color with varying degrees of magnification.  From their body of work, they have chosen 35-40 images for inclusion in this exhibition.  Accompanying these photographs will be magnificent cross-sections of petrified wood from the Herbert and Joan Zuhl Collection of petrified wood.   This collection features dozens of perfectly preserved, beautifully polished cross-sections of fossilized trees, some of which flourished more than 100 million years ago. Many of these trees are so perfectly preserved that features such as growth rings, worm holes and the effects of fires and disease remain clearly visible. Most of these spectacular cross section exhibit vibrant reds, blues, greens and other colors caused by the minerals which were present during fossilization process millions of years ago.
