Cash for Cockroaches
Healthy, live American Cockroaches needed for new Insect Wing!
Houstonians are invited to contribute their cockroaches at the entrance to the Cockrell Butterfly Center on Tuesdays (May 8th and May 15th) from 4 – 7 p.m. or Saturdays (May 5th, May 12th and May 19th) from 12 – 3 p.m. for $0.25 each. Upon arrival, ask for a Museum entomologist. After the first 1,000 cockroaches are collected, donors will be given passes to come back and visit their friends when the new Brown Hall of Entomology opens May 25, 2007.
The offer is available for the first 1,000 cockroaches that crawl through the door. All of the cockroaches collected from the public will become part of a display featuring the “sanitary engineers” of the insect world such as cockroaches, dung beetles and termites.
“Cockroaches are fastidious creatures,” said Nancy Greig, curator of entomology for the Houston Museum of Natural Science. “They are as clean as the area in which they live, and catching them is a great activity for kids. By contributing cockroaches from your environment, you’ll be helping educate all our visitors about this, and the many other, surprising truths about bugs.”
Stay tuned for more information on opening weekend festivities May 25th, 26th, and 27th!
