Over the course of the last three decades, the Houston Museum of Natural Science has continually invested in improved and expanded facilities, allowing the Museum to keep pace with Houston’s rapid growth and meet the ever-increasing demand for our educational programs and exhibitions.
Now, the Museum is once again facing capacity issues that severely limit our ability to fulfill our educational mission and meet the burgeoning demand for Museum programs in a responsive and flourishing Houston community.
You can help us grow by donating online.
While the Museum is fortunate to have strong relationships with a number of community funderscorporations, foundations and individualsand a membership base of 45,000, it takes both earned and contributed revenue to support our operations. Furthermore, those who benefit most directly from Museum programsschool children and demographic groups that are under-represented in scientific and technical fields, for exampleare the ones least able to provide significant financial support.
The Museum was built to accommodate 200,000 visitors a year. We currently host 500,000 schoolchildren annuallyin addition to more than 2.5 million other visitors.
It is not a question of “If we build it will they come;” they are coming and we need the space to accommodate our patrons now.
Museum President Joel A. Bartsch
The HMNS@100: Building for a Second Century of Science capital campaign is designed to provide funding for additions to the Museum’s facilities that will better accommodate both our swelling numbers of visitors and the community’s escalating interest in thought-provoking exhibitions and informative educational programs.

The expansion plan will add a direly needed 115,000 square feet in combined exhibition, education and classroom space - effectively doubling the number of classrooms available for educational programs; doubling the amount of public exhibition space that will be available for temporary and permanent installations; and tripling the amount of available collections storage space, to ensure the conservation and care of our collections for decades to come.
By supporting this ambitions undertaking, you will enable the Museum to continue to fulfill our missionto preserve and advance the general knowledge of and delight in natural science and related subjects, and to maintain and promote a museum of the first classfor even greater numbers or children and adults.
As the expansion becomes a reality, it will open doors to even more grateful visitors of all ages and interests as they delight in the wonders of our natural world.
