Volunteer Benefits & Requirements

What are the benefits of becoming a volunteer?

The greatest reward for volunteering is the great satisfaction that comes from doing something worthwhile. At HMNS, there are plenty of additional benefits as well.  Volunteers receive:
  • Information on upcoming training programs and special events through our volunteer newsletter, The Dashing Diplodocus.
  • Invitations to dinners, coffees, field trips, and other activities throughout the year.
  • Training from curators and other Museum experts.
  • A Museum badge upon completion of 12 hours of service.
  • Free parking in the HMNS Parking Garage whenever you volunteer.
  • Information on upcoming events through the volunteer newsletter.
  • Adequate administrative support.
  • Attend volunteer activities.
  • Free admission to any Museum venue (including Wortham IMAX® Theatre, the Cockrell Butterfly Center, and the Burke Baker Planetarium) while wearing your volunteer badge.
  • Two free Museum passes for every 40 hours of service you give.
  • Free training materials.
  • Free admission to lectures, workshops, and brown-bag events.
  • 10 percent discount in the HMNS Gift Shops during your first year; 25 percent discount after one year and 40 hours of service, and additional employee discount days.

What are the requirements of a volunteer?
Each volunteer must:
  • Be at least 18 years or older, exceptions considered, call (713)639 - 4656 or e-mail volunteering@hmns.org.
  • Dress appropriately, in accordance with your particular job or activity.
  • Become familiar with and abide by the policies and procedures as outlined within the Volunteer Guidelines or as explained by staff.
  • Represent the Museum, at all times, in an appropriate and responsible manner.
  • Act as a member of the Museum team when working with other volunteers and staff.
  • Be prompt and reliable in reporting for assignments, tours, meetings, and training sessions.
  • If unable to report, make arrangements with someone on the substitute list (if applicable), or call the Volunteer Office and let us know.
  • Attend training sessions and undertake additional education if needed to remain informed about Museum collections and exhibitions.
  • Should you decide to conclude volunteering, inform the Volunteer Office and return your museum badge to the Volunteer Office.
  • Understand that irregular attendance, poor performance, or failure to adhere to Museum rules may be interpreted as a volunteer's desire to resign.
