HISD Tour Docent Program

HMNS needs new volunteer recruits! This excellent program has exceptional benefits and rewards for participants. The benefits include the free education you will receive in a host of natural science disciplines. The rewards are that you can make a difference in the life and mind of a young public school student.

No advance knowledge or training is required, just a desire to learn about natural science and a willingness to pass your knowledge on to a child.

A team of 80 docents is needed immediately to complete this program. The training sessions are fun, informative and offer a variety of interesting topics. Some of the subjects you will learn about include: Paleontology, Geology, Egyptology, Gems and Minerals, Native Americans, Chemistry, and many others.

The HISD Tour Docent Program runs from September through May (Except during the month of February, when tour participants are 7th graders, not 4th graders.) Volunteers must be available weekdays from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Docents are expected to work at least two days per month. A sample work schedule would be a docent who volunteers every 2nd and 4th Thursday of any given month.

Requirements:
You must be willing to attend docent-training sessions and work at least 40 hours throughout the year. (Approximately 4 hours per month) You may choose to work in the HISD 4th Grade or the kindergarten - 2nd Grade programs.

For additional information, please contact the HISD Docent Program coordinator via e-mail: volunteering@hmns.org or by phone: (713) 639-4656.
