Docent Jobs
A docent at HMNS functions as a teacher and tour guide for visitors who arrange for a guided tour. Teaching experience is not necessary; we provide the training.
HISD Tour Docent Program:
This outstanding program has exceptional benefits and rewards. The benefits include an ongoing education that you'll receive absolutely free. The rewards include knowing that you can make a difference in a child's life. We require no advanced knowledge or training, just a desire to learn about natural science and a willingness to share that knowledge with a child.
A team of 80 docents is needed for our program serving 4th-grade students in HISD. Training is fun and informative, addressing a variety of interests. Some subjects include paleontology, geology, Egyptology, gems and minerals, Native Americans, chemistry and much more. The program runs from September through May. The exception is February, when the students are HISD 7th graders. Volunteers must be available weekdays from 10 a.m. - noon and are expected to work at least two days each month.
Requirements: You must be willing to attend training sessions and complete at least one year of service, working a minimum of 40 hours during that year (approximately 4 hours per month). You may choose the 4th Grade Program or the Kindergarten-2nd Grade Program.

Choose from a variety of subjects, including paleontology (dinosaurs and fossils), malacology (mollusks and shells), gems and minerals, Texas wildlife, and African wildlife. Hours are flexible, weekday or weekend times available. Training is required.

PLacements are also available to create science kits and catalogue our collections. You can also assist behind-the-scenes in the Cockrell Butterfly Center. A wide variety of jobs are available, depending on your own particular skills and interests. Volunteers are primarily needed weekdays; hours and times may vary.
Special Events Volunteers: Provide support during special events at the Museum. We will notify you when volunteer opportunities arise at exhibition openings, members-only events, the annual gala, and other special occasions. Volunteers are often needed during evenings and weekends.
