Summer 2015 Internship
X•plorations Camper Health Coordinator

Salary: $8.50 per hour
Hours: 35 hours per week (Monday -Friday 8:30am – 3:30pm)
Dates: June 1, 2015 – July 31, 2015
Supervisor: Scott Stevenson, X•plorations Camp Manager 

The X•plorations Camper Health Coordinator Intern must be organized, detail-oriented, reliable and ready to ask questions. The Intern must be able to meet required deadlines and maintain an up to date database of camper health records throughout the X•plorations Summer Camp program. The Intern will be supervised and mentored by the X•plorations Camp Manager and work directly with the X•plorations Summer Camp Registrar in the Education Office.

The goal of the Houston Museum of Natural Science is to provide the Intern with a challenging project that allows him/her to develop professional skills while working with Museum patrons, summer campers, interacting with X•plorations Summer Camp staff, and contributing to the program as part of the Summer X•plorations team. The Intern will learn the importance of non-profit service in a Museum environment.

Responsibilities include the following:

• Meet once a week with supervisor to discuss challenges and progress of projects.
• Support the X•plorations team, this includes active participation in staff meetings.
• Collect and organize camper health records each week
• Identify any camper special needs, allergies and medical issues
• Manage medication check-in procedure and ensure camper access to appropriate medications
• Maintain records of all health information for X•plorations campers
• Follow up with patrons for missing information and health record forms
• Assist Xplorations Camp Manager with minor medical issues of campers

Job Requirements:

• Must be a full time undergraduate student as of Spring 2015 returning as a full time student in Fall 2015.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
• Experience with Microsoft Excel and creating spreadsheets for data tracking.
• Interest in working in a museum and educational environment.
• Comfortable working with children ages 6-12 years old
• Interest in customer service and interaction with Museum patrons.
• Intern must have access to reliable transportation.
• Intern must be comfortable lifting large items, approximately 40 lbs.
• Must be organized, detail-oriented, reliable and ready to ask questions.

Wildlife Intern 


Salary: starting at $9.00 per hour
Hours: 35 hours/week (Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm)
Dates: May 26, 2015–August 29, 2015 
Mandatory Training Session: May 16, 2015 at 8:30 a..m

Eligibility: Current full time undergraduate students as of Spring 2015 returning as a full time student in Fall 2015.

Qualifications:

Interest in working in a museum and educational environment. I
ntern must have his/her own vehicle.
Intern must be comfortable handling live animals including snakes, lizards, frogs, rats, cockroaches and have the ability to lift heavy objects (40 lbs).
Must be organized, detail-oriented, reliable and ready to ask questions.
Must have a positive attitude and show strong initiative.
Previous experience in caring for a variety of animals and aquariums.
Experience in public presentations an advantage.

Responsibilities include the following:

Assist in the coordination and care of a wide range of small native and exotic animals on a daily basis including reptiles, amphibians, birds, small mammals, fish, marine invertebrates, insects and arachnids.
This work involves feeding and handling animals and cleaning cages.
Maintain a clean and organized animal facility as well as accurate records of daily animal care and observations.
Maintain classroom and exhibit hall aquaria/terraria.
Present wildlife talks to small groups of summer camp students using live education animals. (Additional training will be provided.)
Run errands to purchase and pick up required animal food and supplies through local vendors which may require the use of personal vehicle (mileage reimbursed).

Summer Intern - Xplorations Resource Coordinator

The Houston Museum of Natural Science is offering a summer internship in the Youth Education Department. The Xplorations Resource Coordinator will work with Youth Education staff as part of the museum’s Xplorations Summer Camp. The Intern will be responsible for coordinating and organizing the educational materials used for the Xplorations Summer Camp classes which serve over 500 children each week during the summer. The Intern will also have the opportunity to learn about and get involved in other aspects of the Youth Education Department’s summer programming. The Intern must be able to meet required deadlines. This work may involve some moderate lifting. The Intern will also be asked to drive to nearby stores to acquire supplies using Museum purchase orders and corporate cards. The Intern will be supervised and mentored by the Curator of Education Collections.

Teacher - Xplorations Summer Camp Program

Successful applicants will teach in the Museum’s Xplorations summer camp program; engaging children through hands-on learning activities, working with student volunteers and paid teaching assistants to organize classroom materials and projects and maintaining a safe and fun environment for our campers. Xplorations Summer Camp teachers are paid $17.00 per hour. Teacher applicants should have an interest in science, natural history and related fields. Additionally, they should communicate well with children, teenagers and adults, demonstrate initiative, and have a positive attitude.

Pre-service Teacher - Xploration Summer Camp Program 

Successful applicants will work in the Museum’s Xplorations summer camp program; interacting with children, organizing classroom materials and projects, and generally assisting our teachers and gaining classroom experience. In addition to this teaching assistant role, pre-service teachers may have the opportunity to perform the role of a lead teacher as needed. Qualified applicants will have completed an undergraduate degree by May 2015 with classroom experience. Pre-service teachers will be paid $13.00 per hour. Applicants should have an interest in teaching and in education, science, natural history and related fields. Additionally, they should communicate well with children and adults, demonstrate initiative, and have a positive attitude. Previous participation as a Houston Museum of Natural Science volunteer is an advantage.
