Red Peacock Butterflies living in the Cockrell Butterfly Center

related to Houston native Buckeye butterfly

In its native South America, this attractive little butterfly, Anartia amathea, is common in open, weedy areas.

Here in the Butterfly Center, the Red Peacock frequents the hottest, driest spots. Watch for this species in the meadow area or along the stairway to the third level.  It is related to our native Buckeye butterfly.
