Science on a Sphere

Permanent Collection

Suspended above the T. rex in our atrium, you’ll want to be sure to stop and marvel at this ten foot wide giant animated globe. Watch as complex environmental processes unfold above you in vivid detail and learn to appreciate the “blue marble” as never before. Created by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Science on a Sphere uses high-speed computers, four projectors and advanced imaging techniques to create the illusion of a planet, Sun, moon or any other celestial body rotating in space.

Be sure to visit the Science on a Sphere interactive kiosk on the second floor in front of our giant globe.

You get to select the movie or picture of your choice with the touch of a finger! Explore the ocean, our atmosphere or outer space to learn more about our environment.

Please help us to preserve our collections for the next generation by not using flash when taking personal pictures at HMNS and at HMNS Sugar Land. Exposure to strong lights over time causes fading and deterioration of most artifacts and specimens.

Flash photography is ONLY allowed in the Grand Hall and the rainforest of the Cockrell Butterfly Center.

Selfie sticks are not allowed anywhere in HMNS, HMNS Sugar Land and the George Observatory.

For press and any commercial photo shoots, please contact the Public Relations dept.
