Family Overnight
Have you ever wondered what the Museum is like after dark?
Our Family Overnight is for children ages 6-12 and their chaperones to have a night of fun activities at the HMNS followed by sleeping in one of our exhibit halls as well as breakfast and museum access the next morning. At the Overnight you will get to watch a Cool Chemistry demonstration, participate in a fun activity, explore the Hall of Paleontology during a photo scavenger hunt, and watch a planetarium show in the Burke Baker Planetarium.
What is the Family Overnight?
The Family Overnight is an opportunity for children ages 6-12 and their chaperones (must be at least 21 years of age) to spend a night at the Museum on Friday September 12, 2025. Overnight participants will be able to visit and explore the Hall of Paleontology while working on a scavenger hunt, participate in an activity, watch a dazzling chemistry demonstration and see a late night Burke Baker Planetarium show. In the morning breakfast tacos will be provided and when the Museum opens at 8am participants are welcome to explore Second Saturday member activities and explore all the permanent exhibits. Coupon codes will also be provided that morning to attend special exhibits and other separately ticketed opportunities. A more detailed schedule will be sent to registered participants closer to the event. Please note, bedtime is at 11:00 pm and participants will not be able to deviate from the schedule or visit unauthorized spaces. We want to ensure everyone has plenty of time to participate in the activities and fully enjoy their night at the museum!
Check-in will be open from 6:00-6:45 pm on Friday, September 12th. Once check-in is closed, no additional participants will be admitted to the overnight program. The Overnight ends at 8:00 am on Saturday, September 13th.
Please Note: In order to ensure that as many families are able to register as possible, we require that each group limits themselves to 10 participants at most.
Sleeping Accommodations
Everyone will be sleeping in an exhibit hall (TBD). Family units will be kept together, but will be sharing their space with other families as well. You will be assigned a spot. Some exhibit lights do remain on due to constraints of the building. We suggest that you think of this as an indoor camping experience. Please note that there are some outlets, but they are few and far between so we cannot guarantee that you will be near one and suggest bringing a portable charger for phones, etc. If there is a medical reason (such as a CPAP machine) that one of your family members needs to be near an outlet please let us know in the registration form. Please note that if you do need to be near an outlet for a medical device you may be placed very close to another family group who also needs access to the plug and may be in less ideal locations. People may also need to “borrow” the plug to blow up air mattresses.
Who should I contact if I have more questions?

Registration
Registration for members will open on July 29, 2025 and public registration will open on July 31, 2025. Registration will close when all spots are filled or on August 29, 2025, whichever comes first.

The Overnight costs $115 per person for current HMNS members, and $145 per person for non-members. The price is the same for children and chaperones.
In order to ensure that as many families are able to register as possible, we require that each group limits themselves to 10 participants at most.
The activities are designed for children ages 6-12 and at this time we are not able to deviate from that age range. We require at least one chaperone (aged 21 or above) per 5 children and at least two chaperones per group of 8 or more.
We should be able to accommodate common food allergies (as long as we are alerted at least two weeks in advance of the event), though we cannot guarantee that there will be no cross contamination. If we are told ahead of time we can get gluten free and/or dairy free pizzas for dinner to accommodate those with sensitivities. For breakfast we can ensure there are dairy free, egg free, and nut free taco options. We are unable to provide gluten free tacos, but we will provide fruit and gluten free granola bars. If you would feel more comfortable bringing your own food due to allergies, you are welcome to do so and please notify the Overnight Manager at least two weeks in advance. Note that any food must stay in the Grand Hall or the conference hall (unless other accommodations have been discussed with the Overnights Manager).
If you would like to join in the activities but do not feel comfortable spending the night you are welcome to leave after the planetarium show. Please note that choosing to only participate in the evening portion does not change the pricing. If only part of your party will be leaving please ensure that the ratio of at least two adults per 8 kids is still followed for those staying.
We require that children are with their chaperones the whole time they are at the event. However we only require 2 chaperones for every 8 children so if you have multiple chaperones and one does not want to stay the night that is acceptable as long as the ratio is still within the required limits.
While we would love to be able to host everyone of all ages for this Overnight, the Family Overnight is designed to be appropriate for children ages 6-12 (plus chaperones) and we are unable to accommodate anyone outside of that age range. If you have family members who would like to join you the next day to explore the museum you will be able to get them discounted admissions tickets.
This Family Overnight is an opportunity for those who may not be able to participate in private overnights (which are typically booked by larger groups such as Scout troops/packs, schools, etc.) to have this type of experience. If you have more than 10 people in your group and believe you still qualify for this Overnight please don’t hesitate to contact us at Overnights@hmns.org. You can also submit a Program Request Form for a private Overnight if your group does not qualify for the Family Overnight and you would like to spend the night at the Museum.
There will be multiple staff members on site and at least one staff member by the exhibit hall(s) where guests will be sleeping who can help with any issues that may come up in the night.
Families will be assigned sleeping spots and while we will make sure groups have some space between them your family will still be sharing a sleeping area and bathrooms with the other families.
This Overnight is only for children ages 6-12 and their chaperones. If you are interested in an after hours event for adults we do have our Sleuths and Secrets programs, adult education programs, and you can contact specialevents@hmns.org for other after hours opportunities.
- As this is an indoor camping experience there are not sufficient facilities for bathing; however, we do have restroom facilities for changing into pajamas and getting ready for bed. Therefore we suggest pajamas and a change of clothes.
- Please bring a refillable water bottle as there are stations throughout the museum for water.
- Some lights in the sleeping area may remain on during the night so an eye mask is recommended for those who are sensitive to light during sleeping hours.
- A certain level of noise may be present, so if you are a light sleeper you may want to bring ear plugs as well.
- Each participant is responsible for bringing their own bedroll or sleeping bag and pillow. The sleeping area is carpeted but not exceptionally soft, so extra padding may be desirable for adults (Please note: nothing larger than a twin is allowed due to space constraints). Be sure each camper can carry all of his/her own gear easily.
- Bring all necessary toiletries such as toothbrush and toothpaste. Aerosol sprays are not permitted as they are damaging to museum objects.
- All items should be labeled with participants name should someone get separated from their gear.
- Chaperones should bring flashlights for escorting campers to restroom facilities after lights-out.
- Please note that power outlets may not be conveniently located in the sleeping area to charge phones and therefore a portable charger is highly recommended. Please inform the Overnight Manager if you require an outlet for a medical device while sleeping.
What NOT to bring…
- Do not bring any food with you to the Overnight*. No outside food will be allowed during the Overnight. Dinner, an evening snack and breakfast will be provided for all participants. No food, even wrapped, will be allowed in the sleeping area. * Please contact the Overnight coordinator to make arrangements for special snacks or additional food items needed for your Overnight due to allergies or dietary restrictions.
- Please discourage your group members from bringing any of the following items: jewelry, toys, makeup, candy or gum, electronic games, laptops, or anything else that is unnecessary for the Overnight experience.
- Please do not bring tents or cots/air mattresses larger than a twin. Also note that outlets are not guaranteed for air mattresses.
