We love dinosaurs, but let’s not forget the extraordinary aquatic life we have here at HMNS! 

Stop by Glassell Hall to make a fun jellyfish craft under the glow of our faux aquatic world. Then, head over to the Malacology Hall, where our friendly docents are ready to share fascinating facts about our extensive seashell collection on the shelf… or should we say, seashelf! 

Plus, don’t miss the face painting station from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm, where guests of all ages can transform into sea creatures, mermaids, or whatever their imagination desires! 

The first 100 members to stop by the membership table will receive a small shark fan—perfect for cooling off after exploring! 

Due to time constraints and high demand, face painting is not guaranteed. We will have a hard stop at 1:00 pm, with the line closing at 12:50 pm.

BTS – Prehistoric Giants: The Age of Dinosaurs

Journey through the age of the dinosaurs, by touching real fossils and uncovering the incredible stories they hold. Explore the rise of dinosaurs during the late Triassic, their dominance throughout the Jurassic, and the diverse ecosystems they ruled. Discover the extraordinary variety of creatures that thrived alongside these ancient giants and learn about the dramatic events leading to their mysterious extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period 66 million years ago. 

Tour led by James E. Washington III in the Morian Hall of Paleontology.

Lecture – An Evening with the Experts: Innovations in Breast Oncology – Coming Soon

The Department of Breast Medical Oncology presents a comprehensive and accessible overview of the key topics in the field today. In one evening, you will hear from multiple specialists on a range of subjects, including the fundamentals of breast cancer epidemiology and prevention, the critical role of lifestyle and energy balance, the promise of new clinical trials, and the cutting-edge science of genomics. Bring your questions for an open Q&A session with our panel following the presentations.

Class – The Language of Birds – Coming Soon

September 11, 2025 | 6:30 pm

From the sweet whistle of a cardinal to the harsh caw of a crow, birds sure make a lot of noise – but what does it all mean? Explore the difference between songs and calls, call types and their meanings, and examples of Houston bird “lingo.” You’ll learn how to eavesdrop on bird conversations and gain a new perspective on the drama in your local wild community. 

Kelsey Low is the Adult Programs Manager at the Houston Arboretum where she helps other adults connect to Houston’s urban wilderness through classes on everything from cooking to bird watching. She has been a bird watcher for 25 years and is particularly fascinated by bird behavior. A committed advocate for nature in the city, she is a Texas Certified Environmental Educator, a member of the Texas Parks & Wildlife Urban Outreach Advisory Committee and sits on the City of Sugar Land PARCS Board.

Class – Pencil the Past – Coming Soon

Ever wish you could ask a dinosaur expert all your childhood questions? Now’s your chance!

Join Jurassic James® for a hands-on paleo-art night where you’ll sketch your favorite prehistoric creatures by studying real fossils on a guided safari through the Morian Hall of Paleontology, all while exploring the art of scientific illustration. You’ll leave with drawing tips, “how to draw dinosaurs” notes, and a custom Jurassic James® sketch of your favorite ancient animal, from ammonites and dinosaurs to woolly mammoths.

James Edward Washington III, also known as Jurassic James®, is on a mission to advance scientific research in paleontology and geology while promoting science literacy. Through engaging education and storytelling, he helps people gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the natural worldusing Earth Science as the foundation.

Mind Over Matter – A Wellness Night at HMNS presented in collaboration with Reverse Happy Hour

Supporting Member Soirée: Funk Night

Get ready to turn up the groove—Funk Night is coming in hot! Join us in the electric Wiess Energy Hall where the vibes are high and the rhythm never stops. The City Funk Band is bringing the beats, so dust off those platforms and come ready to dance. Strike a pose at our Glambot station and snag a glam shot of your funky fresh outfit. We’ll keep you fueled with passed hors d’oeuvres, and our cash bars will be pouring all night long. 

This event is to celebrate the continuous support of our Supporting Level Members.
